A “Mud Run” to Combat Human Trafficking
By Frances Chu
Last year, I found Lotus Outreach through a smartphone app called ShopKick. The app described Lotus Outreach as a non-profit organization that helps and protects victims of human trafficking in Cambodia. This reminded me of an article I read in the Glamour magazine in 2006 called The Sex Slave Tragedy by Mariane Pearl. The article talked about the human trafficking industry in Cambodia, and I remember reading it and getting so upset about the suffering of these children forced into prostitution at such a young age. I was 18 back then and I told myself that one day, I will help in one way or another.
Now I have finally done something to help these victims of human trafficking. I created a blog and a Facebook page for Lotus Outreach in New Jersey to raise awareness for this cause. I also decided to create an event to raise money for LO. My family and friends know that I love signing up for fun things, and the Rugged Maniac Mud Run caught the most attention from everyone. The Mud Run charity event was amazing, and I managed to raise $567 for LO. I created a video for all my friends and family to see what I will be doing in the Mud Run and also made Lotus Outreach bracelets to send my thanks to those who donated. In addition, I created speeches at my university asking people to donate money to my charity and I would give them a bracelet to show my appreciation.
I am very happy to be a contributor to Lotus Outreach and to have helped victims of human trafficking. I will continue in the future to create events to raise awareness for this cause.
Here are some pictures from the event:

I love a good mud run! I was just reading about human trafficking, and the human trafficking statistics completely took me by surprise. I would love to be a part of an organization to help stop human trafficking. Great post, thanks for sharing!
